ePOWER TIP: (full
story)
How
NOT To Be The Last One To Find Out Your Site Is
Down! ...
Imagine going to a party
where everyone is snickering and you wonder why
—until you find out that someone taped a "Kick
Me!" sign on your back (okay, okay, it only
happened to me once). That's what it's like when
your Web site goes down and you are the last to
know. Unfortunately in this case, the red in
your cheeks will match your bottom line as you
lose potential customers, too. Well, with this
special free online service you never have to be
in the dark about your site going dark again.
There are a number of Web site monitoring services
that will contact you upon your site going down,
however most of them charge at least $15 US/mo.
Server Rat is a free service that will check
your site every 15 minutes and contact you via
e-mail, AOL Messenger, or ICQ anytime it finds
your site inaccessible.
In addition to showing your
site uptime statistics, it also has aggregated
live statistics for all the Web sites it monitors
--typically showing about 13% of all sites as
down! Eventually they hope to provide statistics
on your site's Network Latency (i.e. the time it
takes for a packet of information to travel from
your site to various geographically placed test
sites) which is usually only available from
services like Server Check Pro from
NetMechanic.com that currently charges about
$15 US per URL.
For most online real estate
professionals however, this is a perfect (and
free) solution to the "my site has been down how
long?!" blues.
